As coaches, managers etc. we teach a group of people for a very short period of time each week. It is easy to overlook the fact that they are all unique individuals. The benefit from one on one communication with each of them, delivered in the learning style that they are most comfortable with can really help them and give them the self-belief they need. Over the years - and its taken a few - I have come to appreciate this. My own technique is to talk to each of the people in the team before the game. This is done while they are warming up - calling them out one by one. Less than a minute each its enough time to create that personal touch. Equal Time - Give the Children Balance

Coaches who are “kids in teams” coaches are those who give equal playing time to all of the children in the team. Coaches who are not “kids in teams” coaches are those who pay lip service to the idea. If the game is in the balance the same children are on the bench every time. The coach makes a promise to make it up in the next game but doesn't honour the promise if the next game is a close one. This approach can have a major effect on the child's self esteem. They are not stupid, they know who the best players are. It’s very hard to do this but it takes practice. You have to be disciplined and put the needs of the children first. If you put the win as the priority you will turn some children away from team sport forever. Its natural, we all want to win.
