Kids In Teams - Enjoyment

Steve Jenkins - Tuesday, September 02, 2014

As a role model to children playing sport, be it a coach, parent or any other we should always remember the primary reason our kids play team sport is for their enjoyment.

Sometimes this is compromised by the coaches desire to win at all costs or parents living out their own dreams or parents having a competitive desire for their own kids to be the best in the team. Every time the kids play ask them

  1. Did you enjoy it ?
  2. What did you like ?
  3. What didn't you like ?
  4. Can we change it to make it more fun ?
Do we ever stop to think about what really makes a difference to the kids, what they remember and what they will forget ?

At the end of each season I ask the kids a few question as input to a presentation I give them containing photos and a summary. These questions relate to the enjoyment they had and why they liked being in the team

Some of their responses:

  1. My favourite moment was all of it
  2. I liked the coaches jokes but I didn’t understand them
  3. At the end of the match there was nothing in the tank
  4. We learnt from our losses & built on them
  5. I loved playing in a team that passed the ball around
  6. The responsibility on the pitch has helped me at school and in the rest of my life
  7. The funniest moment was when the dog dumped on the pitch during the game
  8. I enjoyed being stupid with friends
  9. It’s a good team we work well together & its challenging
  10. We all respect each other

The answers to these questions are a real insight into what matters to the kids. Surely we should focus on these.
